He said to him the third time, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”… And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.” John 21:17
The mission of First Presbyterian Church is “to be a congregation of believers carrying out the Word of God and joyfully bringing the community to the church and the church to the community.” In pursuit of that high standard, members of our congregation involve themselves in a wide variety of service projects and ministries in and around Rocky Mount. These efforts include:
In 2010, the church made a commitment to reinvigorate our longstanding relationship with Braswell School. When Braswell Elementary closed in 2009, we thought our participation was at an end. However, when the Nash/Rocky Mount School system reopened the building as an alternative school, we heard a call to help some of the most at-risk children in our area. Our assistance has taken the form of teacher support, tutoring, and food assistance. In recent years, 100% of our Fun Run for Charities receipts have gone to support this ministry.

Since 1976, First Presbyterian Church has been instrumental in organizing, building and maintaining this apartment complex, which provides quality, independent-living housing at a modest cost to senior citizens and physically handicapped people. Over the years, many of our members have dutifully served on the Board of Covenant Homes, Inc., working diligently to preserve its fine legacy and continue the important work of offering safe housing for people who have difficulty affording it.
Local residents, Jackie and Mickey Bailey, started this wonderful ministry for children in Zambia. Each spring, our congregation helps support this wonderful ministry by collecting loose change with a “Bucket Brigade” during worship to offset shipping costs of supplies to Zambia, as well as collect needed items in a shipping barrel.
This important service is staged and directed from the kitchen at First Presbyterian Church. Nearly every weekday, volunteers from the community pick up prepared food from our kitchen and distribute it to those in need of inexpensive meals.

Each summer, many of our youth and adults commit a week to join the community-wide effort known as Gatekeepers Work Camp. During this week, teams of volunteers perform maintenance and repair for homeowners who would not otherwise be able to afford necessary work.
Joining forces with like-minded churches in the area, our congregation offers financial support to this program. When people come to our church needing assistance with rent or high utility bills, social workers help us to determine when need is merited and to provide financial support when appropriate.
Peacemakers are a Christian community development organization serving the under-resourced area of South Rocky Mount in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Their mission is to empower members of the community with the knowledge and skills necessary to lead successful and sustainable lives.

This is only a partial list of the ways our congregation is trying to serve the community in which we live.
As we seek to feed God’s sheep and tend God’s lambs, we always welcome new workers and helpers. If you feel led to join us in any of these efforts, please call the church at (252) 446-9121!
